Large Gilded Overmantle Mirror C.1905

Description

Superb quality and very impressively proportioned Edwardian gilded overmantle mirror c.1905. Measuring six feet in length. Original 62" x 28½" mirror plate. Superb Adams style frame with an overhanging cornice retaining all 39 original balls over a flower and trellis frieze. Fine pair of reeded half columns with Corinthian capitals flanking the mirror. Ebonised moulding along the bottom edge. Excellent original condition.

Created around the turn of the 20th century, Edwardian overmantel mirrors frequently drew inspiration from Classical and Regency designs. They feature wide horizontal proportions, ball moulding, and fluted column pilasters designed to complement grand fireplace mantels.

Frames from this era were typically built from pine or softwood overlaid with carved wood details and composition moulding. The gilded finish was applied using gold leaf over a gesso base, housing thick plate glass, often with hand-cut bevelled edges.

Authentic period pieces exhibit timber backboards held with old nails or screws, natural oxidisation on the mirrored glass, and subtle wear to the gold leaf showing the red or yellow bole clay beneath.
