An overmantel mirror, historically referred to as a chimney glass, is a large decorative mirror specifically proportioned to hang or rest directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Emerging as key interior features during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these mirrors were designed to maximize natural light and visually enlarge reception rooms.

Victorian gilt frames were constructed using a softwood base, such as pine, covered in moulded composition ornamentation made from chalk, resin, and linseed oil. A gesso layer was applied over this foundation before real gold leaf was water-gilded or oil-gilded onto the surface to create a luminous metallic finish.

Authentic nineteenth-century gilt mirrors often feature original mercury-silvered glass displaying soft foxing or desilverisation around the perimeter. The back of the mirror usually reveals hand-cut wooden backing boards and subtle red or yellow clay bole showing through areas where the gold leaf has worn naturally over time.
