Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian overmantel mirror is a large wall mirror designed specifically to rest directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Typically crafted during the 19th century, these mirrors feature arched tops, straight flat bases, and gilded wooden or composition frames with classic moulding details.

Victorian gilt mirror frames were predominantly constructed from carved wood or molded gesso (a plaster-like composition) applied over a timber frame. The surface was finished using oil gilding or water gilding with thin gold leaf, encasing reflective silvered glass.

Authentic period gilt mirrors display natural wear, subtle flaking, and oxidisation across the gilding, often revealing the red or grey clay bole undercoat beneath the gold leaf. The back boards generally consist of uneven, dark pine or oak planks fixed with historic nails or screws.

An antique gilt mirror can be placed above a modern fireplace, console table, or dining room sideboard to create visual contrast. The gold frame warms neutral colour palettes and adds depth to minimal, contemporary room schemes.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive polishes that strip gilding. Glass cleaner should be applied sparingly to a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror plate to prevent moisture seepage behind the frame.
