An overmantel mirror, also known historically as a chimney glass, is a decorative wall mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these pieces served both to reflect light throughout reception rooms and to act as an architectural focal point.

These mirrors were typically crafted from hand-carved wood or moulded composition detail onto a pine substrate, finished with genuine gold leaf water gilding or oil gilding. The reflective pane was originally made using silvered mercury glass or early plate glass, held in place by sturdy timber backboards.
