Fine English Porcelain Cabinet Plate by James Rouse Jnr., Courting Scene, C.1880

A fine English porcelain cabinet plate dating to around 1880, exquisitely painted by the distinguished porcelain artist James Rouse Jnr. The centre is decorated with a beautifully rendered circular panel depicting a romantic courting scene, painted with exceptional delicacy and softness of tone.

The composition is framed by an elegant festooned border enriched with elaborate raised gilt scrollwork, all set against a refined soft ivory ground and finished with a gilt rim. The quality of the painting is immediately apparent, with the figures sensitively modelled and the landscape handled with the painterly finesse for which Rouse is so admired. The plate is signed J. Rouse.

James Rouse Jnr. (1834–1891), son of the celebrated porcelain painter James Rouse Snr., trained at Coalport and later worked at Ridgway before becoming an independent decorator. By the 1880s he was producing finely painted works on blank porcelain sourced from leading English factories, and he is rightly regarded as one of the finest porcelain artists of the 19th century.

A highly decorative and very collectible example of Victorian English porcelain painting, ideal for a cabinet display or wall arrangement.

Condition: Excellent antique condition. No damage and no restoration.
