Georgian Flammiform Dwarf Ale Glass

18th century
Description

This is a scarce Georgian, English, wrythen-moulded flammiform dwarf ale glass dating from the second half of the 18th century, c1780.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a funnel-shaped bowl measuring 5.3 cm (2.1 inches) in diameter at the upper rim. The bowl is wrythen-moulded with a second gather of glass that reaches up to within two centimetres of the upper rim and has a flammiform fringe. The bowl sits on a knopped stem and a conical foot which measures 6 cm (2.4 inches) in diameter. The glass is 12 cm (4.8 inches) in height. There is an 8 mm long shallow scratch on the top of the foot which contains two unburst bubbles dating from manufacture. There are no chips, cracks, other significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.

It is made from lead metal weighing 125 g. (~ 4 1/2 oz.).

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A dwarf ale glass is a small 18th-century drinking vessel designed specifically for consuming ale, characterised by its short stem and conical or trumpet-shaped bowl.

These glasses were hand-blown using heavy lead crystal glass, often featuring optical moulding techniques such as flammiform ribbing and hand-finished pontil marks on the base.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of hand-crafting including slight asymmetry, natural wear on the base rim, a rough or ground pontil mark, and a dark tone characteristic of lead glass.

Antique glass vessels are frequently arranged inside illuminated display cabinets, placed on decorative trays upon sideboards, or grouped alongside other historic glassware on open shelving.

Clean gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild dish liquid, avoiding harsh chemicals, thermal shock, and dishwashers to prevent glass sickness or cracking.
