Fine George II Mahogany Concertina Action Card Table with Drawer, C.1750

18th century
Description

A fine mid-18th century George II mahogany concertina action card table, circa 1750. The well-figured folding top opens to reveal a baize-lined playing surface with shaped corners and integrated dished recesses for counters and coins.

The table is fitted with a useful drawer to the frieze and retains its original concertina-action mechanism, allowing the rear leg to swing out smoothly to support the open top. The shaped top with rounded corners is both elegant and practical, offering generous playing space.

Raised on well-proportioned cabriole legs terminating in pad feet, the table displays good colour and patina throughout, with attractive wear consistent with age and use.

A classic and highly functional example of Georgian craftsmanship, equally suited as a games table or occasional table.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George II concertina action card table is an 18th-century folding surface table featuring an extending timber frame mechanism that opens evenly to support a double-top playing surface.

Mid-18th century card tables were predominantly constructed from dense West Indian mahogany, featuring brass handles, secondary softwoods like pine or oak for drawer linings, and baize linings on the inner surface.

Authentic pieces feature dense, heavy dark mahogany, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, period brass fittings, pad or claw-and-ball feet, and age-appropriate wear around the folding hinges and action mechanism.

Position the table closed against a wall as an occasional console table, styled with symmetrical table lamps, framed artwork above, or ceramic decorative objects.

Keep mahogany furniture in a temperature-controlled environment away from direct sunlight and radiators, and apply beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain.
