Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Overmantel mirrors originated in seventeenth-century Europe and became prominent during the Georgian and Victorian eras. Designed specifically to sit above a fireplace hearth, their primary purpose was to reflect flickering candlelight and daylight, increasing illumination while serving as an architectural focal point in reception rooms.

Nineteenth-century overmantel frames were constructed from carved timber, typically pine or lime, coated with layer of gesso plaster. Intricate floral and scrolling details were moulded from composition material, followed by hand-applied leaf gilding using gold leaf and water-gilding techniques.

Authentic pieces feature timber backboards, evidence of hand-carving beneath the gesso layer, and subtle wear or oxidation to the gilding where the red or grey clay bole beneath shows through. Reproduction mirrors often use resin, uniform spray gilding, and modern plywood backing panels.

Position the mirror centrally above a living room mantelpiece or chimney breast to anchor the space. Combining a detailed nineteenth-century gilded frame with clean contemporary furniture creates architectural contrast and amplifies natural light throughout the room.

Dust the frame gently using a dry, soft-bristled artist brush or feather duster, avoiding liquid cleaners which dissolve traditional water gilding and soften gesso. Clean glass mirror plates separately by applying glass cleaner to a cloth rather than spraying directly onto the glass near the frame.
