Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A secretaire bookcase is a dual-purpose piece of cabinet furniture originating in the 18th century that combines an upper glazed display or book cabinet with a lower chest featuring a pull-out or drop-front writing desk.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from solid and veneered mahogany, featuring hand-carved dentil mouldings, dovetail drawer joinery, and mouth-blown glass panels held by wooden astragal glazing bars.

Authentic Georgian examples typically show hand-sawn timber marks on the back panels, original brass hardware with natural oxidisation, hand-cut dovetail joints, and characteristic construction details like bracket feet and oak or pine secondary drawer woods.

Position the cabinet in a study, living area, or hallway as a focal anchor piece, balancing its rich mahogany tones with neutral wall colours, minimalist ceramics, or curated literature inside the glazed upper section.

Maintain the wood finish by dusting regularly with a microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, while avoiding direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage.
