We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced to Britain during the Restoration period around 1660, the trefid spoon originated in France and represents a key evolution in European flatware design. It is characterised by its flat handle ending in a three-lobed terminal, marking the transition from earlier round-stemmed spoons to flattened, ergonomic handles.

Trefid spoons were typically hand-hammered from sterling silver, formed from a single ingot by skilled silversmiths. The oval bowl and flattened stem were raised using specialist hammers and stakes, with hallmarks struck into the stem or bowl reverse.

Authentic period examples feature a distinct three-lobed notched terminal, a broad oval or egg-shaped bowl, and a flat stem. Hallmarks are generally stamped on the back of the stem near the bowl, often showing maker marks, silver purity, and town marks consistent with the late Stuart era.

Antique silver spoons can be displayed inside shadow boxes, arranged on velvet-lined trays, or presented in wall-mounted cutlery racks on a dining room sideboard. Grouping pieces by period or maker creates a sophisticated historical focal point.

Clean antique silver gently using a non-abrasive silver polish applied with a soft cotton cloth. Avoid over-polishing, as this can wear down delicate hallmarks and natural surface patina; store flatware in tarnish-resistant cloth bags away from humidity.
