Small early 19th.c. Welsh box settle or hall bench c.1800. Purchased locally, it is an unusual example being in teak or similar rather than native timber - suggesting a link to maritime trade perhaps? Low and slightly sloping backrest with original moulding to the top and unusual reeded detail to the upper panels and the lower mullions. Shaped arms with rounded ends on tapering and chamfered supports. Board seat, the centre panel hinged to reveal useful storage below for boots and shoes etc. Flat panels to the front and sides and a moulded plinth or kickboard around the base. Note the original backboards and how the rear flares outwards for stability.
