Antique Afshar Tribal Rug. 132cm X 114cm.

Description

A very nice late 19th century afshar rug.

Earlier examples tend to be almost square in format

Central hexagonal zig-zag edged medallion with geometric quarter spandrel corners all within an abrashed (subtle variations in colour of the dyes) dark indigo blue black field.

Nice little touch are the ''barber-pole'' end panels with minor even fringes.

All over low even pile. Even fringes and side cords double bound in light blue wool.

Size is 4 foot 4 inches by 3 foot 9 inches. 132cm X 114cm. At widest points. Fringes not measured in size. Wool pile hand knotted onto cotton foundations with the wefts dyed light blue.

Originating from nomadic and semi-nomadic weavers in southeastern Persia, Afshar rugs are noted for their durable wool construction, bold geometric medallions, and deep navy and terracotta colour schemes.

Traditional hand-knotted tribal rugs are crafted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool or cotton warp and weft foundation, coloured with natural vegetable dyes.

Authentic pieces exhibit asymmetrical hand-knotting visible on the reverse, subtle abrash colour variations in the dyed yarn, and slight irregularities in the geometric pattern.

A small tribal rug can be placed in an entryway, beneath an occasional table, or layered over a larger neutral jute or sisal rug to add structure and pattern.

Vacuum gently without a rotating beater bar, rotate the rug periodically to distribute wear evenly, and address spills immediately using cold water and a clean cloth.
