Originating in 19th-century France during the reign of King Louis Philippe, these mirrors are characterised by a rectangular frame with softly rounded top corners and square bottom corners. The frames typically feature understated moulding, bead detailing, and gold or silver leaf gilding over gesso.

Frames were constructed from carved solid wood, such as pine or walnut, coated with layers of gesso plaster. Gold leaf was applied using water gilding techniques over red or yellow bole clay, while the mirror plate was crafted using mercury or silvered glass backed with wooden timber panels.

Authentic pieces generally display original pine or oak backboards held by hand-cut nails or screws, natural silvering degradation or foxing on the glass, and visible red bole clay showing through areas where the gilding has worn over time.
