Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Louis Philippe style originated in France during the reign of King Louis Philippe I from 1830 to 1848. Mirrors from this era feature rectangular silhouettes with softly rounded upper corners, clean lines, and restrained decorative elements such as incised lines or beaded inner borders.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or oak wooden frames coated with layers of gesso. Gold or silver leaf was applied over a clay base known as bole, and the glass plate was silvered using traditional tin-mercury amalgam techniques.

Authentic pieces display distinct structural characteristics, including a straight bottom edge designed to sit flat on a mantelpiece and softly curved top shoulders. Looking at the back, original pine backing boards, authentic hand-drawn glass, and red bole showing through worn gilding indicate period authenticity.

A Louis Philippe mirror functions as a versatile accent piece, suitable for placement above a fireplace mantelpiece, mounted above a dining room sideboard, or leaned vertically against a wall to introduce light and depth to a hallway.

Dust the frame using a soft, dry feather duster or dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners which dissolve traditional water gilding or gesso. Clean the mirror glass carefully with a damp microfibre cloth, keeping moisture away from the inner rim where frame and glass meet.
