Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian silver plated items were produced primarily through electroplating, a technique developed in the 1840s that applied a thin layer of pure silver onto base metals such as nickel silver. These pieces often featured elaborate ornamentation, including foliage, scrollwork, and classical revival motifs, reflecting the decorative aesthetics of the nineteenth century.

Victorian silver plated candlesticks typically feature a base metal core, such as electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) or Britannia metal, covered with a thin layer of fine silver. The interiors were sometimes filled with pitch or resin to provide weight and physical stability.

Authentic pieces generally display manufacturer makers marks, such as EPNS stamps, maker initials, or registration numbers stamped near the base or rim. Natural wear patterns where the underlying base metal shows through, known as bleeding, also indicate genuine period electroplating.

Pair silver plated candlesticks with modern table linens or place them on sideboards to create textural contrast between historic metalwork and contemporary surfaces. Arranging a set as a central group on a dining table adds vertical structure and light reflection.

Clean silver plated surfaces using a soft cloth and a specialised, non-abrasive silver polish formulated for electroplated items. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive sponges, or immersion in hot water, which can strip thin layers of silver plating or loosen internal weights.
