Rare Double Duty Georgian Silver Caddy Spoon

Description

This is a rare double duty Georgian silver caddy spoon Sheffield 1797 Nathaniel Smith & Co. The double duty mark was brought in to help pay for the Napoleonic wars. It was used from 15th July 1797 to the end of August 1798. As double duty was payable not much silver was used in the making of these spoon and the thinness of the silver means that an impression of the marks on the reverse can be see in the bowl of the spoon. There is evidence of repair, again probably due to the quality of the silver used. A rare survivor.
