19th century
For Sale by Arundel Clocks
Description

Hi

I have for sale a 1880s French striking and repeating carriage clock made in France with the original silvered platform and brass winding key.

The case and movement have been fully restored the movement has had new springs(2) so it is not often seen for sale in this condition.

The Case

The case is in solid shiny brass and stands 17cm high x 8.5cm wide with a depth of 7.5cm it is in good original condition with mint thick 5mm bevelled sides/front/back door and top viewing glass.

The case is very heavy and shiny and very hard to photograph they do not do the clock justice at all.

The Dial

The dial is in original condition in white porcelain in great condition, with stunning bold Roman numerals. The clock also retains its very fine original black moon hands.

The Movement

The movement is an eight day time and strike which strikes the hours via a small sweet gong to the rear also has the repeater button on top to repeat the last hour strike, the movement has been serviced ultra sonic cleaned hand polished had 2 new springs re-built and tested so keeping great time over the eight days and jewelled serviced platform escapement this work was carried out about two months ago but just serviced again for trouble free running.

Overall, a very beautiful quality carriage clock by a top quality French maker that looks stunning on display and contains all of its original features. This is quite a rare find these days.

I will ship worldwide.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French repeater carriage clock is a portable 19th-century mechanical clock housed in a rectangular brass case with glass panels. The repeating mechanism allows the user to trigger a strike counting the nearest hour or quarter on demand by pressing a push-piece on top of the case.

These clocks are primarily constructed from cast and polished brass, thick bevelled glass panels, and steel movement components. Dials were typically made from fired white enamel with black painted Roman or Arabic numerals.

Authentic pieces feature heavy gilt or lacquered brass cases, hand-assembled repeating mechanical movements, finely painted enamel faces, and often makers stamps or serial numbers stamped onto the back movement plate.

A carriage clock serves as a sophisticated accent on a living room mantelpiece, study desk, or styled bookshelf, introducing metallic warmth and classical proportion to contemporary or traditional rooms.

Keep the clock in a temperature-stable environment free from excess moisture to protect the mechanical movement and prevent metal tarnish. Wipe the glass panels with a dry microfibre cloth and ensure the movement is professionally serviced and lubricated every three to five years.
