Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century English gilt mirror typically features a wooden frame coated with gesso, decorated with hand-carved or moulded details, and finished with gold leaf gilding. Styles from this period frequently draw upon Rococo, Neoclassical, and Gothic Revival influences with shaped arches and floral motifs.

Frames were primarily constructed from softwoods or hardwoods, covered with gessoa mixture of chalk and binderto allow for precise moulding. Layers of gold leaf were then applied using oil or water gilding techniques over silver, red, or yellow clay bole base coats.

Authentic period gilding exhibits natural wear, fine surface cracking known as craquelure in the gesso, and areas where the underlying clay bole shows through. Genuine antique mirror glass often displays subtle distortion, greyish tones, or slight oxidisation speckling.

A large gilt mirror can serve as a focal point when placed above a fireplace mantelpiece, mounted above a sideboard, or positioned leaning against a wall to create depth and reflect natural light across contemporary spaces.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster. Water and liquid cleaners must be avoided, as moisture can dissolve gesso and lift fragile gold leaf layers.
