A partners desk

is an antique desk form, which is basically two pedestal desks constructed from the start as one large desk joined at the front, for two users working while facing each other.

This piece of furniture was first conceived in the United Kingdom to accommodate the work of banking partners. These gentlemen were usually senior bank officials who wished to work together while keeping the convenience and the prestige of a pedestal desk.

Flame Mahogany

Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany."

The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A partners desk is a large double-sided writing desk designed to allow two people to work facing one another. Originating in 18th-century Britain, these desks typically feature matching drawers or cupboards on both sides.

Victorian partners desks were predominantly crafted using solid mahogany or oak primary frames, finished with decorative flame mahogany veneers, brass lock mechanisms, and inset leather or baize writing tops.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-cut dovetail joints inside the drawers, period brass locks, natural timber shrinkage marks, and twin pedestal construction designed to break down into three separate pieces for transport.

Position the desk in the centre of a home office or library to showcase its double-sided architecture, pairing it with contemporary task lighting and mid-century seating to create visual contrast.

Dust the wood regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax twice yearly along the grain. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources to preserve the veneer, and treat the leather writing surface with specialised leather conditioner.
