Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Cast iron doorstops, historically referred to as door porters, became popular in British households during the nineteenth century. Foundries produced these functional objects in vast quantities, featuring popular contemporary motifs including military heroes, political figures, flora, and animals.

These items were manufactured using sand-casting methods, where molten iron was poured into two-part sand moulds. Once cooled, the iron was removed, hand-fettled to remove excess metal seams, and finished with paint or black lacquer to protect the surface from oxidisation.

Authentic period examples generally display moderate surface wear, crisp casting detail from original foundry moulds, and visible seam lines along the profile. Later reproductions often feature rougher surfaces, less defined detail, and modern Phillips-head screw fastenings if assembled in parts.

A cast iron doorstop can be positioned alongside entryways, internal doorways, or set within a hearth surround as a sculptural accent. The heavy dark profile provides visual grounding when paired against lighter timber floors or painted skirting boards.

Maintain cast iron by removing dust with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth. To prevent rust formation, keep the object in a dry environment and occasionally apply a light coating of clear furniture wax or paste wax, buffing gently to preserve the patinated finish.
