Antique Staffordshire Flatback of a Country Couple

19th century
Description

A charming antique Staffordshire pottery figure group depicting a country couple, the woman carrying a sheaf of wheat upon her head and holding a basket of fruit, her companion in rustic attire with a green cloak and red cravat. Hand-painted in typical bright enamels of blue, green, ochre, and red, and standing upon a grassy mound base.

This piece captures the romanticised rural life so popular in Victorian England reflecting the sentimental taste of the period. The glaze displays a fine network of age-related crazing typical of authentic 19th-century Staffordshire pottery.

Condition: Excellent antique condition — no chips, cracks, or restorations detected. Fine age-related crazing and minor enamel wear consistent with age.

Dimensions:

Height 26.5 cm (10½ in)

Width 16 cm (6¼ in)

Depth 7.5 cm (3 in).

A delightful and well-preserved example of Staffordshire folk art, perfect for collectors of Victorian ceramics or rural genre figures.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Staffordshire flatbacks are press-moulded earthenware ornaments created in Staffordshire, England, during the 19th century. They feature a flattened, unpainted rear profile allowing them to sit flush against a wall or mantelpiece.

These figures were cast from earthenware clay using plaster moulds, covered in a lead glaze, and hand-decorated using overglaze enamel pigments and occasional gilt highlights.

Original pieces display age-appropriate glaze crazing, firing release holes in the ceramic body, simple overglaze enamelling, and unpainted backs showing visible moulding marks.

These ornaments are positioned on mantelpieces, bookshelves, or console tables, often paired in asymmetrical arrangements or alongside modern ceramics for eclectic contrast.

Clean gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush or damp cloth, avoiding submersing the ceramic in water or using harsh chemical cleaners that could damage delicate enamel.
