Description

Antique Oak Pot Board Dresser Base

Antique Oak Pot Board Dresser Base, Late 18th Century

This handsome antique oak pot board dresser base, dating to circa 1780, is a fine example of late 18th-century English country furniture. Crafted from solid oak and displaying a rich, time-softened patina, the piece combines elegant Georgian proportions with practical storage.

The dresser base is fitted with 5 drawers across the frieze, each retaining attractive brass swan-neck handles and shaped backplates. Beneath the drawers runs a beautifully shaped apron, adding a subtle decorative flourish typical of the period. The base stands on turned legs, united by a full-length pot board shelf, traditionally used for storing cookware and household items.

With its generous surface area and useful lower shelf, this piece works equally well as an antique oak sideboard, kitchen dresser base, or console table, bringing warmth and authenticity to both traditional and modern interiors.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pot board dresser base is a traditional item of regional British country furniture characterized by a row of drawers above an open lower platform. Originally constructed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the lower shelf, known as a pot board, was specifically designed to store heavy iron pots, copper kettles, and kitchenware off damp stone floors.

These furniture pieces were predominantly crafted from native hardwoods, most commonly European oak, pine, or fruitwood. Construction techniques relied on mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs, hand-dovetailed drawer boxes, and cast brass hardware such as swan-neck or backplate handles.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-hewn wood surfaces, irregular tool marks, and hand-cut dovetails within the drawers. Inspect the underside and back panels for hand-sawn timber, wooden peg construction rather than modern screws, and natural shrinkage or oxidisation around original brass fittings.

In modern interiors, a dresser base often functions as a hallway console, dining room sideboard, or living room focal point. The upper surface accommodates lighting and decorative objects, while the lower pot board shelf provides a display area for ceramic vessels, books, or woven storage baskets.

Preserve the timber by applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cotton cloth, buffing gently along the grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting, and clean spills immediately with a dry cloth.
