Antique Early 19th Century Oak Dresser Base

19th century
Description

A substantial early 19th century oak dresser base, offering excellent storage and classic country house appeal. The rectangular plank top sits above an arrangement of three frieze drawers over three graduated dummy central drawers, flanked by two panelled cupboard doors enclosing spacious shelved cupboards. Retaining its attractive brass swan neck handles, pierced escutcheons. The cupboard doors retain their original sliding block lock mechanism. The dresser is constructed in solid oak throughout and displays a rich warm colour with a lovely aged patina. A practical and handsome piece, equally suited to a kitchen, dining room or hallway.

Item Reference:

.

Dimensions:

Height – 86.5cm / Width – 161cm / Depth – 50cm

CONDITION REPORT:

Good antique condition, displaying the expected wear associated with over 200 years of use. The solid oak top has surface marks, small historic knocks, shrinkage splits and evidence of long-term use, all adding to its authentic character. The brass swan neck handles and pierced escutcheons appear to be later replacements in keeping with the period, while the cupboard doors retain their original sliding block locking mechanism. There are historic repairs and restorations commensurate with age, including repairs around the top edge and general wear to the interior of the cupboards. The drawers and cupboard doors operate smoothly, the dresser is structurally sound and sturdy, and it has developed a rich, warm patina throughout. Overall, a well-preserved and highly usable early 19th century dresser base ready for everyday use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An oak dresser base is the lower cabinet portion of a traditional Welsh or country dresser, historically used in dining rooms and kitchens for storing tableware, linens, and serving essentials.

Pieces from this era typically feature solid oak construction, hand-cut dovetail joints, oak drawer linings, fielded panel doors, and cast brass hardware such as swan-neck handles and escutcheons.

Look for signs of age including irregular hand-sawn timber marks, hand-carved joinery, original brass hardware with natural oxidisation, and slight structural asymmetry typical of hand-crafted furniture.

Position the dresser base in a hallway, dining space, or kitchen as a functional sideboard, balancing its dark wood tones with minimalist ceramics, table lamps, or contemporary artwork framed above it.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, ensuring it is kept away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber movement.
