Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian cast iron stick stands were developed in the nineteenth century to store walking canes and wet umbrellas in domestic entryways. Foundries such as Coalbrookdale popularised elaborate figural and botanical castings, combining utilitarian drainage trays with classical and mythological themes.

These pieces were crafted using sand-casting techniques, where molten iron was poured into intricate sand moulds. Once cooled, the cast sections were hand-finished, fitted together with threaded rods or screws, and finished with paint or patination to protect against moisture.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces often feature crisp casting detail, substantial weight, and stamped foundry marks or diamond registration marks on the reverse or underside. Reproduction pieces typically exhibit rougher casting seams, blurred detail, and modern hex bolts.

Place the stand near an entryway or in a hallway to serve as both functional storage and a sculptural focal point. Combining heavy cast metalwork with clean modern architectural lines or traditional timber panelling creates visual contrast.

Keep the metal dry by emptying and wiping any accumulated moisture from the base tray. Clean dust from intricate relief work using a soft-bristled brush, and apply a light coat of clear microcrystalline wax periodically to guard against surface oxidisation.
