Victorian Cast Iron Umbrella Stand

19th century
Description

A striking late Victorian cast iron umbrella stand, beautifully modelled as an upside-down umbrella with openwork panels and a sculptural fist-shaped handle. Finished in original blackened paint, this stand combines function with high decorative impact, perfect for a period hallway or traditional entrance. A rare and whimsical example of 19th-century cast iron design.

Good decorative condition with age related wear. One section of the frame has a small historic crack, and one foot is missing, though the stand remains stable and displays well overall.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the 19th century, Victorian cast iron umbrella stands were designed for entryways to hold wet walking sticks and umbrellas, featuring ornate figurative motifs and integrated drip bases.

These pieces were crafted from molten pig iron poured into detailed sand moulds, creating heavy, durable structures with openwork detailing and collection trays for water.

Authentic items exhibit heavy weight, crisp foundry marks or registration diamonds stamped into the metal, hand-finished mold seams, and natural age-related surface patina or minor oxidisation.

Position the stand near an entrance or in a porch to store umbrellas while introducing period architectural interest alongside contemporary hall tables or minimalist coat hooks.

Dust regularly with a dry brush or microfibre cloth, clean subtle soil with mild soapy water, dry immediately, and apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax to prevent moisture from causing rust.
