Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A lowboy is a small table with drawers designed during the 18th and 19th centuries, originally serving as a dressing table or side desk. It typically features a central shallow drawer flanked by deeper drawers above a shaped apron.

19th-century lowboys were predominantly crafted from solid woods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often featuring secondary timbers like pine or oak for drawer linings. Hardware typically consisted of cast brass swan-neck or batwing drawer pulls.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, signs of hand-planing on secondary timbers, and age-consistent wear around the handles and base of the legs. The colour of the mahogany should show natural patination and variation from light exposure over time.

A mahogany lowboy works well as a console table in a hallway or landing, providing both decorative structure and practical storage. Placing contemporary artwork or a simple table lamp on top creates an effective balance between historic woodwork and modern decor.

Keep mahogany furniture out of direct sunlight and away from central heating sources to prevent wood movement or drying out. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood finish.
