Georgian Mahogany Lowboy

18th century
Description

A charming example of a Georgian mahogany lowboy. The stands on straight tapered club legs with pad feet, carved at the shoulders to give the appearance of a cabriole curve. The piece has the typical three drawer configuration for a lowboy with shaped apron below. The drawers all retain the original handles with Chippendale style pierced backplates, and the drawer fronts have a nice thumbnail moulded edge which is repeated to the top. The lowboy has a great untouched colour and patina, the deep red of Georgian period mahogany. The piece is in good antique condition, it has some old repairs and faults, such as a split to the top, but this is all part of the character. This is a fine and charming provincial example of a Georgian mahogany lowboy, a classic piece of English period furniture. C.1760.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A lowboy is a small table or chest with drawers designed during the 18th century, originating in the Queen Anne and Georgian periods. It was historically created to serve as a dressing table or occasional writing desk in domestic living spaces.

Georgian lowboys were predominantly constructed from mahogany or walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, solid oak or pine drawer linings, and hand-cast brass handles. The frame typically rests on cabriole or turned legs ending in pad or claw-and-ball feet.

Authentic Georgian lowboys display hand-carved elements, slightly irregular hand-planed timber linings, authentic hand-cut dovetails, and period brass hardware. Natural patination and signs of historic wear around the handles and base of the feet further confirm age.

A Georgian lowboy functions effectively as a hallway console table, a vanity table in a bedroom, or an occasional writing surface in a study. Placing modern table lamps or contemporary artwork on top creates a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and current interior trends.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the natural grain. Position the table away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and surface finish deterioration.
