Georgian Mahogany Lowboy, Circa 1800

19th century
Description

A Georgian mahogany lowboy dating from around 1800, displaying pleasing proportions and excellent colour throughout. The rectangular top retains a rich, warm patina, with attractive figuring to the mahogany and gentle surface wear consistent with age and use.

The arrangement of three drawers comprises a long central drawer above two shorter drawers, each fitted with original brass ring handles on circular backplates. The drawers are well constructed, with visible dovetailing, and offer useful storage while maintaining the piece’s elegant symmetry. Below, a shaped central apron adds refinement and visual interest, framing the knee space in a classic Georgian manner.

Raised on tapering square legs, the lowboy has a light and graceful stance, well suited to a variety of interiors. The sides are constructed in solid timber, showing honest wear and colour variation, further attesting to the piece’s age and authenticity.

Versatile in use, this lowboy would serve equally well as a small writing table, dressing table, or occasional table. A characterful and practical example of late Georgian furniture, offering timeless appeal and everyday usability.

A lowboy is a small table with drawers, introduced in the 18th century during the Georgian period, typically used as a dressing table or side table.

Georgian lowboys were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany, walnut, or oak, featuring hand-dovetailed drawers and cast brass drop or ring handles.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary drawer linings, natural wood shrinkage on surfaces, and original brass fittings.

Position the piece as an entryway console table, hallway focal point, or occasional desk paired with modern art or a decorative wall mirror above.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish annually, keeping the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
