Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 19th-century side tables from the Georgian and Regency periods are recognised for their restrained elegance, classical proportions, and clean lines. They frequently feature rectangular tops, drawers with brass handles, and slender square tapered or turned legs.

Craftsmen primarily utilised dense mahogany for primary surfaces, often employing flame mahogany veneers for drawer fronts and table tops. Secondary timbers such as pine or oak were used for internal drawer linings and structural framework.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-dovetailed drawer joints, hand-sawn timber marks on unexposed surfaces, and original brass hardware showing age-appropriate oxidisation. The drawer bottoms usually feature wood shrinkage gaps along the grain consistent with natural ageing.

Position the table in an entryway or hallway paired with a contemporary mirror above it, or use it as an occasional table in a living room. Combining dark mahogany tones with light walls creates a balanced contrast between period craftsmanship and modern decor.

Clean surfaces regularly using a soft dry microfibre cloth, avoiding aerosol polishes containing silicones. Apply a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year, buffing gently along the grain to preserve the original patina and finish.
