Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Nouveau bronze sculpture emerged in the late 19th century, characterised by flowing organic curves, stylized depictions of nature, and romanticized feminine portraiture. Sculptors from this period often integrated cold-cast titles directly onto the integral bases of the works.

These busts were primarily produced using lost-wax or sand-casting methods before being hand-chased and finished. A chemical patination process was then applied using heat and acids to achieve specific tonal finishes ranging from mid-brown to deep charcoal shades.

Authentic pieces generally display sharp casting detail along hair and fabric folds, authentic wear to high-rebound points of the patina, and cast signatures or foundry marks. Castings of this era also feature consistent metal thickness and period-correct threaded mounting construction inside the base.

Position the sculpture as a focal point on a flat surface such as a sideboard, marble fireplace mantlepiece, or open bookcase shelf. Complement the dark bronze patina with neutral stone surfaces, dark timber cabinetry, or contemporary minimal backdrops to accentuate the silhouette.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to clean intricate areas. Avoid liquid solvents, chemical abrasives, or water, applying a thin coat of microcrystalline wax annually to protect the original patinated surface against moisture.
