Pair of Edwardian Brass Candlesticks

1900 - 1920
Description

A good quality pair of candlesticks dating from the early 20th Century. They are designed in a classical taste with brass sconces and drip trays, a central column and a round stepped foot with an additional bakelite-type material used to create a contrast against the brass. They are made in parts held together on a central threaded brass bolt with a very good quality heavy feel to them.

They are in good condition for their age and there are no major damages or losses. There are some faint surface marks and a small dent on the rim of one sconce but nothing detrimental. They have been gently cleaned and polished and are ready for use.

Approximate Measurements:

Height : 9 1/2" / 24cm

Base Diameter : 4” / 10cm

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian brass candlesticks, dating from the early twentieth century, are defined by their refined proportions, restraint in ornament compared to Victorian precedents, and clean architectural lines. They often feature turned cylindrical columns, circular moulded bases, and integrated drip pans.

These candlesticks were cast from solid brass, with individual components such as the base, stem, and socket often turned on a lathe before assembly using threaded rods. Variations in surface treatment, including polished finishes paired with chemically patinated or darkened areas, were common design features.

Authentic pieces display signs of hand-finishing, subtle irregularities from turned construction, and original threaded interior fixings. They typically show natural oxidation, residual polishing compound in recessed crevices, and weight consistent with solid cast metal.

Brass candlesticks can be arranged symmetrically on a mantelpiece or styled along the centre of a dining table to provide warm lighting. Mixing turned metal pieces with contemporary ceramics or natural wood surfaces creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth. To clean wax drippings, soak the affected areas in warm water to soften the wax without scraping the metal, and avoid harsh abrasive polishes that strip historical patina.
