Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Spiral and barley twist designs became popular in European metalwork during the seventeenth century, taking inspiration from Solomonic architectural columns. By the late Victorian and Edwardian eras around 1900, advancements in brass casting allowed manufacturers to efficiently produce open twist stems for decorative domestic candle holders.

These pieces were typically crafted using cast brass for the detailed stem and sconce, while the broad drip trays were spun or pressed from sheet brass. Components were then joined using threaded steel rods, brazing, or copper rivets to secure handles and side fittings.

Authentic period examples often show subtle casting imperfections, hand-finished seams, and uneven surface wear around the base. Threaded connections beneath the base often feature historical hand-cut threading or square nuts rather than modern metric fixings.

Place brass candlesticks on a wooden mantelpiece, side console, or dining table to introduce warm metallic accents. They function well as standalone decorative objects or paired with contemporary neutral tapered candles to bridge traditional and modern aesthetics.

Remove stray candle wax by applying warm water or placing the holder under a gentle hairdryer, avoiding sharp metal scrapers. Clean the brass periodically with a specialized non-abrasive metal polish and a soft microfibre cloth to maintain its shine while preserving deep surface detail.
