Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pairings of ladies and gentlemans armchairs originated in the 19th century, designed with slight variations in scale to accommodate traditional attire and stature. The gentlemans chair typically featured broader proportions and armrests, while the ladys chair offered a slightly narrower seat and lower arms to accommodate layered skirts.

Victorian armchairs were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, featuring intricate hand-carved details. Upholstery frequently utilised deep-buttoned leather or heavy velvet, secured with brass studs and supported by coil springs and webbed seat frames.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-carving with subtle variations, period-correct brass castors, and hand-tacked stud work beneath the frame. Inspecting the underside reveals hand-sawn timber rails, traditional horsehair padding, and natural age oxidisation on the internal wood structures.

Place the pair across a fireplace hearth or flank a low coffee table to create a balanced conversational seating area. Complement the rich timber tones and bold leather upholstery with neutral wool throws, textured rugs, and polished brass lighting fixtures.

Keep leather seating away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent cracking and fading. Apply a specialist leather balm periodically using a microfibre cloth, and gently dust the carved wood frame with a soft brush.
