Small 18th Century Georgian Oak Dresser Base

18th century
Description

A Delightful & Charming Mid 18th Century Oak Potboard Dresser Base, Or Sideboard, Of Relatively Small Proportions, Retaining Superb Rich Colour And Patina Throughout, Having Rectangular Plank Top Over Three Regular Drawers And Four Small Drawers, With Replacement Pierced Brass Plate Handles, To Elegantly Shaped Frieze Raised On Turned Upright Supports With Original Potboard Shelf Below.

An attractive dresser base of useful small size and therefore perfect for a wide ranging variety of spaces around the home, due to its narrow proportions amongst many other features. It is also of course very elegant and retains a good rich colour and patina as a consequence no doubt of many years hard graft and use, combined with love and care.

There is very little damage to speak of, certainly nothing visually unappealing, or which causes a structural problem and although the brass handles are replacements they are in keeping with the rest of the piece and sit really well on it so there are no concerns in that respect.

As suggested by the name the original purpose of a potboard shelf was to store all manner of pots and pans. These pots and pans were often still wet, very heavy, or possibly still hot when placed back onto the storage shelf and this is the reason that we regularly find potboard shelves damaged beyond repair, or in rather ugly condition visually. No such problem with this particular piece however, it has a perfectly functioning and attractive potboard shelf.

As with all items which we offer for sale this dresser base has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our trained antique furniture restorers, where it has recieved a natural wax polish to ensure it is ready for immediate placement within the home environment. The only drawer with functioning lock and key is the middle one, although this is not really the sort of item which requires lockable drawers anyway and very often we see that they have no locks at all.

Circa 1750.

Height 29.25in.

Width 60in.

Depth 15in.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian oak dresser base is a traditional British low storage furniture piece dating from the 18th century, originally designed for country homes to store utensils and serve food.

Craftsmen constructed these dressers primarily from solid English oak, utilising hand-cut dovetail joints, mortise and tenon joinery, wooden peg fixings, and cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces feature hand-planed timber surfaces, original pegged joinery, irregular drawer linings, natural timber oxidisation, and age-appropriate wear around handles and foot bases.

An oak dresser base functions as an entryway console or dining room server, creating a balanced contrast when paired with modern artwork, stone ceramics, or minimalist lighting.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and excessive sunlight, dusting regularly with a microfibre cloth and applying high-grade beeswax polish annually to preserve the patination.
