Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century portraiture often focused on realistic depictions of subjects in formal civilian or military attire, intended to convey status, profession, and family heritage through careful attention to clothing, medals, and posture.

These pieces typically feature oil paint applied to stretched canvas, mounted within frames constructed from carved wood or molded gesso that is finished with hand-applied gold leaf gilding.

Authentic oil paintings display natural surface age, such as fine craquelure in the paint layers and back canvas darkening. Original giltwood frames exhibit subtle wear to the gold leaf, revealing underlying red or grey bole, alongside traditional hand-carved or molded joinery.

A pair of antique portraits can be hung symmetrically above a console table or sideboard, or integrated into a eclectic gallery wall to add historical texture and character to contemporary rooms.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or liquid polish which can dissolve the water gilding. Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, excess humidity, and sudden temperature shifts to prevent canvas distortion or flaking paint.
