Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A chest on stand, also known as a highboy in American tradition, originated in the late 17th century as an elevated storage cabinet mounted on an open framework base. During the Georgian period, these pieces evolved to feature burr wood veneers, cabriole legs, and decorative carved details.

These pieces typically feature burr walnut or mahogany veneers applied over oak or pine carcasses, constructed using hand-cut dovetail joints. Decorative elements include cast brass handles, hand-carved motifs such as shells or acanthus leaves, and cabriole legs terminating in ball-and-claw or pad feet.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-planed drawer linings with subtle irregularities in dovetail joints, natural timber oxidisation on secondary woods, and genuine wear surrounding keyholes and handle fixings. Look for original joinery along the stand frame and consistent age-related patination across the walnut surfaces.

Position the cabinet against a neutral wall in a hallway, dining room, or living space to let its rich grain and silhouette act as a focal point. Complement the warm timber tones by balancing it with modern abstract artwork, sculptural lamps, or minimalist ceramic decor.

Position the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators to avoid veneer lifting or timber shrinkage. Apply a thin layer of natural beeswax once or twice a year along the grain, and dust brass fittings gently with a dry soft cloth without chemical polish.
