Early Victorian Breakfront Oak Bookcase

19th century
For Sale by LTANTIQUES.CO.UK
Description

This impressive breakfront bookcase is crafted in a beautiful golden oak and features six panelled pin doors (three glazed above, three solid below) all with working keys, and a large secretaire drawer.

The upper section offers nine height-adjustable shelves behind beautifully arched glazed doors, flanked by finely carved corbels.

The secretaire drawer opens to reveal a black leather writing surface, an arrangement of pigeon holes, and nine satinwood drawers, all of fine dovetailed construction. With working lock and key and lovely carved handles.

The whole bookcase is in superb condition, with a striking presence.

This is a large, high-quality and very heavy piece, but it can be taken apart for transport: cornice, three top sections, base, and plinth separate.

A truly impressive example with a lovely, warm colour—perfect for a grand study, library, or period interior.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A breakfront bookcase features a central section that projects forward beyond the flanking side wings. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, early Victorian examples often showcase solid oak construction, arch-topped glazed doors, and classical decorative details.

Cabinetmakers primarily used solid European oak or oak veneers over pine frames, accompanied by mouth-blown float glass panels and cast brass or bronze hardware. Mortise and tenon joinery along with hand-dovetailed drawer construction were standard practice.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetails inside drawer boxes, irregular hand-blown glass with subtle wave imperfections, and original brass lock mechanisms. Original backboards are typically pegged softwood or thick oak planks showing hand-sawn marks.

Balance the heavy visual proportion of dark or medium oak by painting adjacent walls in contemporary neutral tones or dark moody shades. Use the glass shelves to curate a mix of leather-bound volumes, ceramic vessels, and framed artwork rather than dense book storage.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year along the wood grain. Avoid positioning the piece near direct heat sources or windows to prevent wood shrinkage, warping, and solar fading.
