Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian Gothic breakfront bookcase is a large storage piece characterised by a central section that protrudes forward beyond the side wings. It incorporates design elements inspired by medieval architecture, such as pointed tracery moulding, carved panels, and heavy geometric proportions popular during the 19th-century Gothic Revival.

Victorian craftsmen primarily utilised solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, and walnut. Dovetail joints in the drawers, hand-carved decorative moulding, adjustable wooden shelf pegs, and heavy plinth bases are standard construction markers from this era.

Authentic pieces display signs of historical craftsmanship, such as hand-cut joinery inside drawers, natural wear on shelf supports, original brass ironmongery, and age-related patination across the wood grain. The underside and back panels typically show unrefined, hand-sawn timber.

A large bookcase functions as an architectural anchor in a living room, hallway, or home office. Styling the open shelves with a mixture of bound volumes, ceramics, and structural objects softens the substantial scale of dark wood in contemporary spaces.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinking and fading. Apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year along the grain to nourish the wood and maintain its original patina, avoiding modern chemical sprays.
