Pair of Large Japanese Satsuma Vases by Kinkozan C.1900

Description

Splendid pair of large Satsuma vases by the celebrated pottery of Kinkozan in Kyoto c.1900. Baluster form vases standing 21½" tall. The main bodies featuring large white chrysanthemum heads and gilded leaves against an unusual purple ground. Flared collars with a lovely gilded collars with raised enamel decoration. Note the mythical beasts on the frieze around the tops. 6" bases with further bands of gilded decoration. Large handwritten marks on the underside of both vases. With an old repair to the lip on one vase and some wear to the glaze around the shoulders of both vases. Otherwise good condition.

Satsuma pottery is a style of Japanese earthenware developed in the Satsuma province during the sixteenth century, gaining widespread global popularity during the late Edo and Meiji periods. It is recognized by its soft cream-coloured crackle glaze and elaborate overglaze enamel decoration with gilt accenting.

These items were crafted using earthenware clay fired at a lower temperature than hard-paste porcelain, creating a permeable body finished with a clear crackle glaze. Artisans applied polychrome enamels and gold leaf using delicate hand-painting techniques before subjecting the piece to a secondary firing.

Authentic pieces generally feature fine glaze crazing, precise hand-painted enamelling with noticeable texture, and gilded details. Many late nineteenth and early twentieth-century examples carry maker marks or signatures on the base, such as the Shimazu crest or studio seals like Kinkozan.
