Description

A Very Good Quality Mid 19th Century Mahogany Quartetto Nest Of Four Rectangular Coffee Tables, Having Well Figured Tops With Crossbanded & Strung Decoration, Raised On Elegant Turned Upright Supports, United By Cross Stretchers. Terminating On Elegant Sabre Feet.

Dating towards the end of the 19th century, but in the Georgian style as is common for this period these tables are very good quality and extremely useful indeed.

The top of each table is constructed from well figured, rich mahogany timber with elegant cross banded decoration. The combination of these features creates a good contrast and an elegant look in combination with the boxwood stringing.

The tables are in good, solid, functional condition, with very little restoration or existing damage to speak of. It is worth noting that we have had many similar nests of this period and it’s not that often that they are found without rudimentary repairs to smashed legs, or with tops that have faded to totally different colour, split, or just generally look different. Its therefore clear that this particular nest has been well loved, cherished and used throughout its life.

As with all items which we offer for sale they have been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled antique furniture restorers who have tightened the joints, cleaned and naturally waxed them to ensure they are presented in retail condition and ready to be placed straight into use.

Perfect for a whole variety of spaces around the home they will add a touch of elegance, class and function to absolutely any room around the home.

A quartetto nest of tables is a set of four graduated occasional tables designed to slide neatly beneath one another when not in use. Originating in the late 18th century, these sets provided space-saving surface space for tea service or reading in period drawing rooms.

Traditional 19th-century quartetto tables were primarily constructed from solid dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or satinwood. Construction involved slim turned legs, mortise and tenon joinery, and curved stretcher rails designed to allow each table to nest closely without interference.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-cut joinery, subtle variations in dimensions, and historical wear patterns along the inner runners where the legs slide against each other. Look for natural patination on the mahogany surfaces and matching timber grain across all four graduating tops.

A set of nesting tables can be arranged fully stacked beside an armchair or sofa as a single side table, or staggered outward to create stepped tiers for displaying objects. The individual tables can also be separated across a room when entertaining guests to provide additional surface areas.

Maintain the timber surface by dusting regularly with a clean lint-free cloth and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the tables away from direct heat sources or high humidity to prevent timber movement, warping, or splitting along the slim leg joints.
