Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century giltwood mirror features a carved wooden frame coated in gesso and finished with thin layers of gold leaf. During this era, particularly in French Louis Philippe and Victorian designs, frames favoured clean moulded profiles with rounded top corners and subtle decorative rims.

Frames from this period were crafted from softwoods or hardwoods, sealed with chalk-based gesso, and coated with a coloured clay bole before genuine gold leaf was hand-applied. The mirror plates were backed with silvering or mercury compounds, which age naturally over time.

Authentic pieces usually display hand-carved rear timber backboards, visible jointing, and subtle wear where the underlying clay bole shows through thin areas of gilding. The glass often exhibits minor oxidation, light foxing, or slight surface waviness consistent with historical manufacturing methods.

A matching pair of giltwood mirrors works exceptionally well placed symmetrically above twin bedside tables, flanking a central fireplace, or positioned side by side over a dining room sideboard. The metallic surface adds warmth and contrasts effectively with contemporary neutral walls.

Dust the frame gently using a dry, soft feather duster or a soft-bristled artist brush, avoiding water or chemical polishes which can dissolve water gilding. The glass should be cleaned carefully with a damp cloth, taking care to prevent liquid from running into the surrounding frame.
