Antique George III Mahogany Wine Cooler

18th century
Description

A fine late 18th-century George III mahogany wine cooler/lamp table of elegant sarcophagus form raised on its original tapering pedestal stand. The well-figured mahogany body displays rich colour and fine patina with moulded edges and original brass ring handles to either side.

The hinged lid opens to reveal a later baize-lined interior, formerly lead-lined, now adapted for modern use as a decorative storage box, lamp table or occasional piece. The cooler is supported on a turned column and triform base with splayed legs terminating in brass castors, typical of late Georgian design.

Date: Circa 1790

Period: George III

Wood: Mahogany

Condition: Excellent antique condition. Fine surface patina and colour; minor age-related marks consistent with age and use. Later baize-lined interior replacing original lead lining.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the George III period in 18th-century Britain, wine coolers or cellarettes were designed to keep wine bottles chilled near the dining table prior to the invention of modern refrigeration. They were typically filled with ice and lined with metal to prevent water leakage.

Authentic 18th-century cellarettes were primarily constructed from solid or veneered mahogany, bound with structural brass hoops, and fitted with zinc or lead linings inside the cabinet.

Authentic pieces feature Period-appropriate construction techniques, such as hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass strapping with aged patination, hand-turned or square-tapered legs, and historical wear consistent with wood contraction over time.

A vintage cellarette functions effectively as a decorative side storage container, an accent piece in a formal dining room, or a standalone side table in a living area or library setting.

Mahogany surfaces require occasional treatment with high-grade beeswax polish applied along the grain, while brass fittings should be kept free of moisture and left unpolished to retain their natural historical patina.
