Gilt, Four-glass Sided Mantel/ Bracket Clock

19th century
For Sale by Masons Antiques
Description

A really outstanding example of these popular and elegant clocks.

Made by VINCENTTI of PARIS, this one is gilded (gold plated) throughout. Regrettably our photos fail to demonstrate the true colour of this clock in all it's splendour as we are very good at clocks and very bad at photography. In real life it is stunning!.

The 8 day movement strikes on the half-hour and the hour with a beautiful mellow tone. it has just been fully serviced by our BHI registered staff and carries our usual 12mths full parts and labour guarantee.

It has an arcaded, convex, enamelled dial with black Roman numerals and superb gilded hands. It is totally free from any chips, cracks or crazing.

The case is gilded throughout and is beautifully formed with fretwork and fine detail. All glass is bevelled and in perfect condition. It has a mercury compensating pendulum.

An absolute gem of a clock that is as clean and bright as a new pin.

All cards accepted.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A four-glass mantel clock is a horological piece featuring transparent glass panels on all four sides, allowing full visibility of the internal movement and compensating pendulum. Popularised in France during the nineteenth century, these clocks showcase mechanical craftsmanship alongside decorative gilded metalwork.

These horological pieces typically feature cast brass or bronze cases finished with gilding, enclosing bevelled glass panels. The dial is frequently crafted from painted enamel, while the compensating pendulum often incorporates mercury vials to maintain timekeeping accuracy despite temperature changes.

Authentic examples exhibit detailed hand-chased metalwork, bevelled glass panes, and French movement maker stamps on the back plate, such as Japy Freres or Samuel Marti. The presence of a mercury-filled pendulum and a two-train striking movement also indicates period construction.

Positioning a gilded four-glass clock on a marble fireplace mantel, bookshelf, or side console adds a structured architectural accent. It pairs effectively with both classical decor and contemporary settings where the exposed brass movement functions as a central focal point.

Gilded surfaces should be dusted gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical polishes or water which can degrade the finish. The mechanical movement requires periodic professional servicing by a qualified horologist to clean, oil, and adjust the gearing.
