We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French Napoleon III gilt bronze mantel clock originates from mid-to-late nineteenth-century France, characterised by cast ormolu ornamentation, classical motifs, and often inset porcelain panels. These clocks feature mechanical movements produced by prominent horological manufacturers such as Japy Freres.

These clocks were constructed using cast bronze finished with gold gilding, known as ormolu, combined with hand-painted porcelain inserts. Internal mechanisms featured brass gear trains, steel arbours, and twin-barrel spring-driven movements regulated by a pendulum.

Authentic examples feature heavy cast bronze mounts with hand-chased surface details and maker marks stamped into the rear movement plates, such as circular trade medallions. Porcelain panels display hand-painted enamel decoration and period gilding rather than modern transfer prints.

Position the clock centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table to establish a balanced focal point. Pair it with neutral backdrops, minimalist artwork, or contemporary ceramics to create visual contrast between historical craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust the gilt bronze surface periodically using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding abrasive chemical polishes or water that can compromise original gilding. Mechanical movements require servicing, oiling, and adjustment by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
