Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century French mantel clocks are characterised by ornate gilded cast metal or bronze casings, often depicting classical figures, foliage, or architectural elements. They frequently incorporate hand-painted porcelain panels or enamelled dials produced in the style of the Sevres porcelain manufactory.

These timepieces were typically constructed using cast bronze or spelter finished with fire-gilding or mercury gilding. Decorative accents were made using hand-painted porcelain panels with cobalt or bleu celeste glazes, paired with brass mechanical clock movements.

Authentic period clocks feature heavy cast metal casings, hand-painted details on the porcelain showing slight irregularities, and stamped clockmaker marks or serial numbers on the rear movement plate from prominent French makers such as Japy Freres or Vincenti.

Place the clock as a central focal point on a simple marble mantelpiece, a dark wood sideboard, or a contemporary console table. Juxtaposing rich gilded metalwork against neutral or dark backdrop walls allows the detailed porcelain cartouches to stand out.

Clean the metal casing by light dusting with a dry, soft microfibre brush, avoiding chemical cleaners or brass polishes which strip historical gilding. Mechanical movements require periodic professional servicing by a qualified horologist every five to seven years to maintain functionality.
