Antique Caucasian Karachov Kazak with Green Ground

19th century
For Sale by Siez Gallery
Description

This 19th century Karachov Kazak is a collectors favourite. The red madder is the perfect backdrop for the rhythmic leaf and calyx border which includes aubergine, that glides between the jagged guardlines. Tribal 'stamps' and latched-hook motifs are carefully placed across the field, to make sure it balances around the anchor of the ivory medallion. This imagery springs to life through the abrash variations in the green & blue a desirable feature in Karachov art that makes it flow with natural vibrancy. These features work in harmony to make this a highly-collectable rug that is perfect for those looking for a standout piece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Karachov rugs originate from the Kazak region in the Caucasus mountains. They are characterized by a central octagonal medallion flanked by four prominent rectangular or square corner motifs, decorated with geometric symbols and bold contrasting borders.

Traditional Caucasian rugs are hand-knotted using locally sourced sheeps wool for both the pile and the warp/weft foundation. Dyes are historically derived from natural plant and mineral sources, creating rich hues of red, blue, green, and cream.

Authentic pieces feature all-wool foundations, hand-tied symmetrical knots, and subtle colour variations known as abrash. The visual layout strictly adheres to the traditional central octagon with four surrounding corner enclosures.

The strong geometric patterns and deep colours of a Caucasian rug provide grounding contrast on modern hardwood or stone floors, pairing equally well with minimalist contemporary furniture or classic dark wood antiques.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating beater bar to protect the pile fibers. Rotate the rug annually to balance foot traffic and light exposure, and seek professional hand-washing specialists for deep cleaning.
