Antique Oil Painting on Canvas Portrait of Lady Attributed to August Heinrich Riedell or Circle 19th Century Very Large Oil Painting Spanish Royal Collection Painted in Venice or Rome Using an Italian Venetian Model

19th century
Description

A fine and impressive large antique oil painting portrait of a lady attributed to August Heinrich Riedell or from the circle of August Heinrich Riedell , late 19th century.

MEASUREMENTS:

HEIGHT:136 cm

WIDTH: 99 cm

This particular large antique oil painting portrait of a lady is one of August Heinrich Riedell models Vittoria Caldoni .

The model Vittoria Caldoni was the most popular model among the German artists residing in Rome in the early nineteenth-century; especially those associated with the Nazarene movement. Over 100 paintings with her image have survived. Many artists considered her to be an ideal female figure. She was generally portrayed in local costume or allegorical garb, often with attributes that referred to representations of the Madonna.

The exact number of paintings she sat for is unknown and many were destroyed, especially during World War II. There are also a few portrait busts. Complicating matters is the fact that many images of her were not done from life. A portrait of her by Pablo Picasso is an obvious example of this.

Among the artists who are known to have engaged her services as a model, one may mention:

Ernst von Bandel

Carl Joseph Begas

Carl Blechen

Franz Ludwig Catel

Peter von Cornelius

Marie Ellenrieder

Joseph von Führich

August Grahl

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century portraiture embraced classical composition, dramatic light control known as chiaroscuro, and realistic detail in dress and textiles. Influenced by Academic traditions and Romanticism, artists emphasised emotional subtlety and formal elegance.

Painters typically applied hand-ground oil pigments suspended in linseed oil onto hand-stretched flax or linen canvas. Works were prepared with a gesso ground coat and often finished with natural resin varnishes.

Authentic period paintings show age-appropriate craquelure patterns across the paint film, natural oxidisation on the reverse of the canvas, and traditional mortise-and-tenon wood stretcher construction.

A large figurative portrait creates a focal point when placed above a minimalist sideboard, mantelpiece, or within a transitional gallery wall, pairing historical art with modern clean lines.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and fluctuating humidity. Clean gently with a soft dry brush and consult a professional conservator for surface cleaning or restoration.
