Large French 19th Century Gilt Marginal Plate Overmantle Mirror

19th century
Description

A Very Good Quality Mid 19th Century French Giltwood And Gesso Rectangular Overmantle Mirror, Having Sectioned Marginal Frame With Superbly Elegant Foliate And Scrolling Carved Decoration Throughout, Enclosing Apparently Original Mirror Plates, Surmounted By Arched Top With Superbly Carved Shell.

Although relatively typical of a French 19th century overmantle mirror in terms of overall design this particular example has many of its own outstanding features and is of very good quality indeed. It also has great presence and would really enhance absolutely any room whatsoever.

Some of those features touched on above include the excellent carved decoration which has much more depth and presence than the majority we have seen, including the wonderful shell.

It also retains what appear to be its original mirror plates, they are certainly very old and have a small amount of of silvering and pitting as one would expect. We cannot guarantee they are original however.

The gilding itself is great, retaining a lovely rich lustre and tone and despite areas of light touching up and restoration, clearly it has never been entirely regilded which is also nice.

This mirror is in great overall condition with the expected areas of repair, replacement and restoration which would normally be found on a carved frame of this age. It has been inspected and attended to by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers and ready for immediate placement straight into the home.

Circa 1860.

Height 64in.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A marginal plate mirror features a central mirror pane surrounded by smaller border, or marginal, mirror plates separated by decorative gilded frame sections, a design popularised in 19th-century France to enhance light reflection above fireplaces.

These mirrors were typically constructed from carved pine or lime wood coated with gesso, detailed with plaster composition moulding, finished with real gold leaf gilding, and fitted with silvered glass plates.

Authentic period pieces display signs of age such as hand-carved wooden backboard backing, red or grey clay bole showing through worn gold leaf, light oxidisation spots on the mirror glass, and plaster-based composition detailing.

A French overmantel mirror can be mounted above a fireplace, anchored over a hall console table, or positioned opposite tall windows to maximise natural light and offer historical contrast to modern architecture.

Dust the ornate frame gently using a dry, soft brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding water or chemical sprays that dissolve water-gilded gold leaf, and wipe glass panes sparingly with a dry cloth.
