Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian tallboy, or chest-on-chest, is an 18th-century furniture form comprising two stacked chests of drawers. Designed to provide vertical storage while saving floor space, these pieces were a staple of British cabinetmaking during the Georgian period.

Georgian tallboys were primarily constructed from native woods such as oak and walnut in the early-to-mid 18th century, with mahogany becoming prevalent later in the period. Secondary woods, used for drawer linings and backboards, often included pine or poplar, fitted with cast brass hardware.

Authentic Georgian tallboys feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer linings, thick hand-sawn backboards, and original brass hardware with threaded posts and cast nuts. Evidence of historic wear, subtle shrinkage splits along timber grain, and a naturally aged patina also indicate authenticity.

Position a tallboy as a focal point against a neutral accent wall in a bedroom or spacious hallway. Pairing the dark timber with modern minimalist lighting, soft textiles, and contemporary artwork creates a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and current interior aesthetics.

Maintain antique oak by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timbers moisture and lustre. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinking, splitting, or fading.
