Daisy Makeig-jones Wedgwood, Lustre Bowl ,Butterflies, C.1915

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine and rare Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre bowl, designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones circa 1915. These brilliant Wedgwood lustres came triumphantly to life, and the initial pattern number of the “First Ten Lustre Decorations”, Z4823, saw the light of day in October 1914, appropriately enough almost exactly nine months after Daisy full establishment as a staff designer! Conceived at the very start of her tenure, Z4823 is both a historic and artistic milestone in the evolution of Wedgwood lustreware, part of the broader Fairyland Lustre concept — created to offer collectors a vivid, imaginative escape from the sombre wartime mood of early 20th-century Britain. The exterior displays Dark Green Lustre over dark all-color stainings, producing an extraordinary depth of tone with a subtle violet shift in changing light. Encircling the body are gilt butterflies and finely detailed oriental ornaments; the foot is defined by a Greek-key frieze, and the rim enriched with a delicate gilt foliate border. The interior glows with Orange Lustre, crimson mottling, and a central medallion in oriental style, bordered in gold. This combination of intricate gilding, layered lustre and storytelling imagery is characteristic of Makeig-Jones’s finest early work.

Size: height 5.8 cm; diameter 10.6 cm. Condition: excellent; white areas inside (see photos) are under-glaze and part of the original finish, not losses. Lustre colors are richer in reality than any photograph can reproduce.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced in the early twentieth century, Wedgwood lustreware features metallic glazes applied over porcelain or earthenware, creating iridescent finishes inspired by natural and fantastical themes.

Metallic oxides are applied over a fired glaze and re-fired at lower temperatures in a reduction kiln, depositing a thin layer of iridescent metal onto the ceramic surface.

Authentic pieces feature printed or impressed Wedgwood maker marks on the underside, accompanied by intricate gilding and characteristic multi-toned, mottled glazes.

Position the piece on a sideboard top or bookshelf where subtle ambient light can highlight the reflective lustre glaze and gold detailing.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid immersion in water or the use of chemical cleaners to prevent wear to the gilded decoration.
