Gillers Antiques Ltd has dated this Wedgwood Butterfly Lustre Bowl to the 1910s.
Encircling the body are gilt butterflies and finely detailed oriental ornaments; the foot is defined by a Greek-key frieze, and the rim enriched with a delicate gilt foliate border. The interior glows with Orange Lustre, crimson mottling, and a central medallion in oriental style, bordered in gold. This combination of intricate gilding, layered lustre and storytelling imagery is characteristic of Makeig-Jones’s finest early work.

Size: height 5.8 cm; diameter 10.6 cm. Condition: excellent; white areas inside (see photos) are under-glaze and part of the original finish, not losses. Lustre colors are richer in reality than any photograph can reproduce.
